Retrospective

I was out of town for the first couple days of the week, so I didn’t quite hit my goal of 34 hours. I feel like I’ve made a lot of progress in gesture drawing. It’s a lot more common to get quick drawings that I like than it was back in Figure Drawing I. I enjoyed practicing the finishes this week too. My anatomy knowledge is often shaky, especially in the forearms, and I couldn’t seem to get a decent looking hand this week.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, Aug. 02

Drawings of my wife while traveling.

The portrait is not flattering at all.

Tuesday, Aug. 03

Drawings of rocks while traveling.

Wednesday, Aug. 04

Gesture drawing from comics.

Figure from comic reference.

This week I focused on taking figures to more of a finish. I tried to get in anatomy, line weight, and shadows, but I didn’t do any rendering. Rather than do line-by-line copies of the reference, I used it as a guide and did my own anatomy and lighting. Trying to do a line-by-line copy would have made this take 3 times as long.

Original panel.

I need to redo the bricks. The inner circles should be thinner than the outer circles all the way around.

Thursday, Aug. 05

Gesture drawing from comics.

Figure drawing from reference.

Friday, Aug. 06

Gesture drawing.

David Finch studies.

This takes the geometrical anatomy studies from last week to the next level with more organic anatomical shapes.

Figure drawing from reference.

I tried to make the hair look better, but gave up and stuck with the short-hand. I like how this turned out though — even the hands.

Saturday, Aug. 07

Gesture drawing from comics.

Figure drawing from reference.

The lower right leg in the first drawing looks very strange. I need to work on foreshortening. The reference I used for these 2 was very small so I had to invent some anatomy.

Sunday, Aug. 08

Gesture drawing.

Female torsos.

Figure from imagination.

There’s no way I could have done this from imagination 6 months ago. His right forearm is impossibly angled, and his right thigh looks wrong, but I really like his left leg and arm. The shadow in the eyes don’t match up.
