Retrospective

I finished reading Robertson’s “How to Draw” book this week, but I didn’t draw everything in it. While I find the perspective techniques in the book interesting and useful, I don’t have much interest in drawing airplanes and cars, and I don’t really like Robertson’s work. These two negative factors (along with my lack of ellipse guides) have demotivated me this week, and though I think it’s still very important for me to practice perspective drawing, it is more important that I become more inspired. Therefore, I’ve decided to cut this unit short and move on to Figure Drawing II on Monday.

I think I need to get a set of ellipse guides and do the drawabox.com 25 wheel challenge before I finish the 12 pages of vehicles. Without ellipse guides my wheels are terrible, and that makes it hard to take my time with the rest of the drawing since it can only be as good as its weakest part. I really don’t want to spend the money on ellipse guides, but maybe I can find a used set on ebay for a decent price. I feel a little defeated that I’m moving on without finishing drawabox, but I will come back and finish it soon.

Log

I think I drew less this week than I have since I started this program. That’s a sign that I’m making the right choice by cutting the unit short.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, Jan. 11

Castle from photo reference.

Ellipses.

Drawabox vehicles. 1953 Hudson Hornet.

I didn’t take my time with any of the vehicles this week. I rushed through them. I think this one came out better than the others though, probably because only one wheel is fully visible.

Environment thumbnails.

These are focusing on composition and value, and are copied from the Robertson book. I used black and white colored pencils and pen on a grey toned paper. Using these materials it seems easy to make something decent looking.

Tuesday, Jan. 12

Castle from photo reference.

I used some black colored pencil to fill in a little value. I wasn’t sure what to do about bricks.

Environment thumbnails.

The bottom right two are based on the castles from the last two days. The rest are from “How to Draw.”

Wednesday, Jan. 13

Castles from photo reference. This is the courtyard of the castle that Dracula’s castle was based on.

Perspective grids for airplanes.

Paper airplane. Side view and three-quarter.

Thursday, Jan. 14

Castles from photo reference.

I finished yesterday’s sketch with some colored pencil and detail.

Aircraft from “How to Draw.”

Friday, Jan. 15

Castle courtyard from photo reference.

Practicing section drawing.

Saturday, Jan. 16

Vehicle from “How to Draw.”

Vehicle perspective grid.

Rough vehicle sketches.

Drawabox vehicles. ’58 BMW Isetta and ’53 Chevy Bel Air.

Again, I was sloppy and rushing with these. When I feel myself rushing like this I should probably stop immediately and go meditate.

Sunday, Jan. 17

Rough vehicle sketches.

The perspective is way off here.

Drawabox vehicles. 1930 Ford Model A pickup.

This kind of looks like a cartoon. Sloppy and rushed. It’s very clear that I need to do the drawabox 25 wheel challenge.
