Retrospective

I spent most of this week learning about materials and textures in Blender. It was a lot of fun.

Drawings and Critiques

Sketching an archeologist’s gear.

This was inspired by the FZD Design Sketching class where they draw pages of props around a common theme. This was a way to make sure I still did some drawing every day since I spent so much time learning Blender.

Interior candlemaker design fully textured.

There is a continuum of how to go from a 3D model to a finished piece. On one side you have a basic 3D block in with no materials, then you do a detailed line drawing on top of the 3D, then paint it and maybe use some photobashing for textures. On the opposite end you can do all the materials, textures and lighting in Blender (or any 3D program), then touch it up in photoshop with a paint-over. This week I was having fun learning about 3D textures so I tried doing everything in Blender. However, I’ve decided I should do it the first way instead. I need more practice right now with drawing and painting, so I don’t want to jump into too much 3D. I have 5 weeks left in the Syn Studio Interior Concept Design class, and plan is as follows:

  • Week 6: finished 3D model and line drawing
  • Week 7–9: painting
  • Week 10: presentation

I wanted to try to do more than one project, but I’ve spent 115 hours on this one so far and I haven’t even started painting it.

Final 3D model.

I’m going to move on to the drawing phase with this design. I’ll be out of town half the week so my plan is to finish the drawing by Tuesday night.
