Retrospective

I focused on black and white environment paintings this week, doing two from reference and two from imagination. I found that I had a hard time rendering from imagination, which means I need to do more from reference first. At the end of the week I decided to start with a line drawing rather than trying to design while painting. I’m not advanced enough to jump into paint without a line drawing.

Log

Drawings and Critiques

Value study from reference.

Value paintings from imagination.

I imagine this to be what it’s like on the surface of Mercury.

Value study from reference.

Thumbnail designs for the tower city of Urithiru from Brandon Sanderson’s “The Stormlight Archive” novels.

I used the process described in Design Cinema episode 105 to create these designs. I generated several ideas in the first page, then did a more polished, perspective sketch of my favorite design. It’s not quite finished yet. Next week I’ll do a more finalized version. I really enjoyed learning the calligraphy to do the fancy writing. I noticed that concept artists usually have really nice handwriting labeling their drawings. I finally buckled down and tried to learn some cool writing. I wasn’t very difficult at all, as long as you think of it more like drawing than writing. It really bumps up the presentation level of the work.
