Retrospective

I decided to do one more week of digital painting because starting next week I’ll be spending all my time on Brainstorm School homework, which is all drawing fundamentals. I’m taking Foundation Sketching, a ten week course where we practice fundamentals by drawing subjects like plants and animals. The course is done entirely in felt tip pen on paper. I’m also taking the Visual Communications flash course, which is 5 weeks long. This course doesn’t offer any feedback, but I plan on doing the assignments anyway. After it ends, I start Perspective Boot Camp, which is another 5 week course. In total I’m taking three courses, but will only be doing homework for 2 simultaneously. These three courses fit perfectly into my goal of doing all the FZD school homework assignments. Foundation sketching corresponds to FZD’s Design Sketching, Visual Communications corresponds to FZD’s Visual Communications (and is taught by a former FZD instructor), and Perspective Boot Camp corresponds to FZD’s Perspective. If I have any time left after Brainstorm homework (unlikely), I will return to digital painting. There is a chance I won’t have time to write blog entries during the next 10 weeks, but I’ll try to at least post my work.

Drawings and Critiques

Rendering materials on a sphere.

Most of these were done last week, but the last two are new. I am proud of the rocks.

I focused on liquids for this page. I really like the wave in the top middle.

I took my time painting the top half of the flames, but it took so long that I left the bottom half sloppy. I proved to myself that I could paint fire convincingly, so I didn’t feel the need to do it for 2 more hours. The water droplet is probably my favorite of all.

So far I’ve finished 9 weeks of assignments from FZD’s Digital Painting course. The next assignment is to paint reflections in a chrome ball. I’m excited for that, but will have to put a 10 week pause on digital painting during my summer courses.
