Term 6, Perspective III, Week 4

For a description of this unit see my Perspective III unit plan. For full context, see the description of my Art Home School Curriculum.

I spent most of the week on the homework for the Brainstorm CABC class. We were supposed to choose a weapon and a theme and draw 30 silhouettes, then do sketches on top of each. The whole process took me about 20 hours. I really wanted to take 2 classes next semester, but with class time and homework, that would be a 46 hour-per-week commitment. That’s a bit too much on top of my full time job, unless I get a lot faster at drawing.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, Jan. 24

Drawabox 100 treasure chest challenge.

Indo-Persian war hammer silhouettes.

The theme (inspiration) I chose was rhinoceros beetles.

Their horns reminded me of the curved, pointy end of the hammer.

Tuesday, Jan. 25

Drawabox treasure chests.

War hammer sketches.

Wednesday, Jan. 26

Treasure chests.

War hammer sketches.

Thursday, Jan. 27

I tried to find more interesting shapes to keep from repeating the same generic chest over and over. Being creative with search terminology goes a long way. I stopped searching “treasure chest” and started searching things like “Arabian strong boxes.”

War hammer sketches.

Friday, Jan. 28

Treasure chests.

War hammer sketches.

The critique I received for these was that I could “push” more of the beetle shapes into the designs. I’ll try to do that next week. I have to choose five, refine the sketches, and do 3 color variations of each.

Saturday, Jan. 29

Treasure chests.

I completed the drawabox.com 100 treasure chest challenge. The only drawabox assignment I haven’t done is the 25 texture challenge.

War hammer sketch refinement, work in progress.

Sunday, Jan. 30

Warm up page.

Textures and organic forms.

Compound geometric forms.

I improved a lot at free hand perspective during this unit, but I still get it wrong quite often.
