Term 6, Intro to Concept Art, Week 2

For a description of this unit see my Intro to Concept Art unit plan. For full context, see the description of my Art Home School Curriculum.

I’m getting more comfortable with drawing digitally. I felt my line quality had improved when I was drawing trees on Friday. My hand started hurting this week when working on small details, but I did some googling and found someone describing how to hold the stylus to avoid pain. It a strange grip, but I got used to it quickly and it really helped. I’m on vacation from my job for the next two weeks so in addition to my normal drawing I plan to do a design project as if I were a concept artist for a game studio. I want to experiment with the types of jobs a concept artist would do to see if I enjoy design.

I switched from Krita to Photoshop at the end of the week, and it really slowed me down. So far I like Krita better, but Photoshop is the industry standard. I probably just need to give it more time.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, Dec. 13

Tree sketches from reference.

All of these look like different styles. I haven’t settled on a shading method that I’m happy with yet.

Tuesday, Dec. 14

Environment thumbnails.

I like the first one the best.

Environment painting from reference.

Wednesday, Dec. 15

Tree sketches from reference.

These have a more uniform style, but my line weight is a bit light.

Thursday, Dec. 16

Environment thumbnails.

The first is my favorite.

Environment painting from reference.

This one went a lot faster than my painting from last week. I had time to start a second one.

Friday, Dec. 17

Tree sketches.

The tree on the left is when I started feeling good about my line quality.

Saturday, Dec. 18

Environment painting from reference.

I like how this turned out. I’m surprised I was able to finish two paintings this week since I only did one last week.

Sunday, Dec. 19

Sketches from the concept art of Dark Souls 3.

It’s been a few months since I’ve done character sketching, and it shows.
