Retrospective
I’m glad to be done with these Bargue drawings. Spending many hours on a drawing and being very precise has heightened my sensitivity to mark making, but ultimately I’m not sure doing these types of studies is going to get me where I want to go, which is drawing from imagination.

This was a project for the Grand Central Atelier orientation seminar. The critique went well. My feedback was that the top of the shoulder is a bit off, and the tricep hanging below the bicep should be more narrow. I spent a lot of time going over all the lines and trying to make them very uniform.

The version on the right is what my phone did to the image when I took a photo in portrait mode. It rendered a gradient for me.
Saturday, Dec. 04
I drew today but forgot to take a photo. That’s only happened twice, and both times have been during this unit. I think it’s because it’s common to work on a Bargue drawing for a few hours and not see much difference.
Sunday, Dec. 05
Simple still life.
This is the next assignment for the GCA seminar. I really struggled with this, and have no idea how people render smooth gradients in half tone with graphite. Also ellipses are basically impossible to draw free hand.
Next month I’ll be doing the polar opposite of this month: 100 drawings per week instead of 3.
