Retrospective

This week I finished the leg and foot bone exercises in the Proko leg anatomy course. I also made some good progress on an original comic page, but it was really slow-going. I spent half the time trying to figure out how to approach the problem at hand, and the other half the time actually drawing my solution. I assume eventually I can draw without having to think as much, but right now everything I try to draw is a brand new problem to approach.

Leg bones.

Drawing with my digital tablet is still very frustrating. I can’t get clean lines.

Original page progress.

It took forever to do all the small detail of the bricks. I’m thinking about blacking out the sides of the towers that are in shadow.

Foot bones.

I finally found a sketchbook I really like — the Art n Fly smooth 9x12 sketchbook. I like drawing with 2H lead on smooth bristol board, so I’ve been looking for a cheaper alternative that’s bound in a spiral sketchbook. The strathmore 300 and 400 series sketch paper feels terrible with 2H graphite, but the Art n Fly paper is really smooth and takes the lead really well. It costs more than strathmore, but it’s thick enough (70 lb.) that you can use both sides of the sheet. I also am experimenting with a non-photo blue pencil. It’s really fun to do a gesture/lay-in with blue, and draw over it with graphite.

Foot bones.

Working out the next comic panels and trying to figure out what to do for the floor/ground.

Original comic page.

All that’s left is the inside of the middle building and the floor. I should be able to finish it next week.
