Retrospective

It was difficult to get motivated this week. I probably need to read an inspirational book to get my drawing hours back up to 35 per week. Since I’m mostly doing quick sketches (between 5 and 20 minutes), the drawings don’t come out very well. I probably need to throw in some longer drawings to get my motivation back up.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, Apr. 05

I built a very simple shadow box.

The idea is to drape fabric around this, and put a board on top with a hole cut out where I can shine a light. I had hoped to start painting this week, but I had to build this before I could set up a still life.

5 minute head lay-ins.

I like the two top heads. The top right looks like princess Leia. The bottom left has unmatched eyes, and the bottom right has too much chin.

More 5 minute head lay-ins.

Copy from the Loomis book.

Tuesday, Apr. 06

5 minute head lay-ins.

10 minute head lay-in from instructor drawing.

It took the instructor 10 minutes, but I probably spent 30 or 40 minutes on this. It might be my favorite head of the week.

Copy from Loomis.

Wednesday, Apr. 07

Warmup.

5 minute head lay-ins.

10 minute head lay-ins from photo.

Copying a comic panel.

Thursday, Apr. 08

5 minute head lay-ins.

10 minute head lay-ins from photos.

Copying a comic panel.

Friday, Apr. 09

5 minute head lay-ins.

20 minute head lay-in from instructor’s drawing.

It took the instructor 20 minutes, but it took me an hour.

Saturday, Apr. 10

Warmup.

10 minute lay-ins from photos.

20 minute lay-in from instructor drawing.

Took about 1.5 hours. I like this a lot, but I think the back of the cranium needs more mass.

Sunday, Apr. 11

Warmup.

1 hour drawing from photo.

I trimmed the (viewer’s) left side of the jaw down quite a bit, but it still looks too large. My shading looks much better when I’m copying it from a drawing. When I draw from a photo it just looks like splotches of dirt.

20 minute lay-ins from photos.

I got the back of Lincoln’s head more correct in this version. The up-tilt in the last drawing looked much better on the page than it does in the photo. Maybe taking pictures of my drawings is a good way to see them with fresh eyes.
