Term 3, Figure Drawing III, Week 2

Week of May 3, 2021

For a description of this unit see my Figure Drawing III unit plan. For full context, see the description of my Art Home School Curriculum.

This week started off strong but I ran out of steam by the weekend. Copying a full comic page took a lot of time this week. It’s an old style (from 1963), so it’s not really what I’m interested in drawing, but I got a kick out of the page and it makes me laugh. I finished a nice, longer figure drawing this week, and next week I will shift gears into lots of 20 minute figure lay-ins.

Drawings and Critiques

Monday, May. 03

Comic gestures.

I spend 18 total minutes drawing during a gesture session (5 x 1 min., 4 x 2 min., and 1 x 5 min.), but the whole process ends up taking about 40 minutes because I have to search through comics to find suitable poses. The nice thing about the Croquis Cafe gesture sessions is that you don’t have to worry about selecting poses.

Copy a comic page.

I have the lay-ins of all the panels done, so now I’m going through and finishing each one.

Full value figure drawing.

I mostly like how this turned out. The face is a little strange looking.

Started the next full value figure drawing.

Tuesday, May. 04

Comic gesture session.

Copy a comic page.

Wednesday, May. 05

Comic gesture session.

I’m still finding it very difficult to get something nice out of these short drawings.

Figure drawing (mapping).

Copy comic page.

I’m emulating inking techniques with a pencil. I think the finishes would probably be better inked on top of the rough pencils. It would also be a lot faster. I’m trying to hold off on inking though until I’m really confident with penciling.

Thursday, May. 06

Comic gesture session.

Fully mapped figure with shadows filled in.

Copy a comic page.

Friday, May. 07

Comic gesture session.

Filling in half tones.

Copy comic page.

Saturday, May. 08

Comic gesture session.

Finished full value figure drawing.

Finished comic page.

Sunday, May. 09

Comic gesture session.

Figure lay-in.

I really need to find a different site to host these photos. This one looks awful when Medium squashes the aspect ratio.
