Term 10, Brainstorm School Spring ’23, Week 2

Week of Jan. 23, 2023

For full context, see the description of my Art Home School Curriculum.

Retrospective

I feel like my motivation has returned in full this week. I finished all my homework, which was a total of 74 grayscale environment thumbnails. I had to rush to finish them all, so they turned out a bit sloppy. For each of my three classes this semester we will be spending a longer time on individual pieces so I should have time to clean things up and get some nice portfolio pieces.

I’ve been reading Mastery by Robert Greene. I previously read George Leonard’s book, also called Mastery, which I loved. Greene’s book is just as good, if not better. I would recommend it to anyone trying to master any subject. There is a nice summary of the key points here.

Drawings and Critiques

Project: Robin Hood’s outlaws in tree house castles.

These are keyframes showing story moments. We will be choosing one and designing out each element in the scene with full 360 turnarounds, then putting each element back into the keyframe for a final painting.

Project: Dark Souls in Tibet.

I like these better than my Robin Hood keyframes, probably because they’re cleaner, and there are no trees. Next week we’ll choose some of our favorite thumbnails and start blocking them in with Blender 3D.

Landscape thumbnails.

These purposefully don’t have any lighting. That is our task for next week.

It feels great to be back into full flow after I lost my motivation in December. I’m already thinking about ways to keep things going during the next semester break.
