Retrospective

I did a few traditional gouache paintings this week. I had the urge to oil paint, but all my materials are in a different state right now because I’m in the middle of moving. I’ll finally be able to move in to my new place on June 1st.

My Brainstorm School summer semester classes started this weekend. I’m taking AD2: Advanced Form Language, and BUD: Blender to Unreal Engine Design. I signed up for the Unreal Engine class at the last minute because I’ve gotten back into computer graphics and game programming a little bit recently. Before I started drawing I spent all my free time on game programming. Learning Unreal Engine will be a cool way to bridge the gap between the game programming and game art worlds.

Work

I tried to apply my knowledge of digital landscape painting to traditional gouache painting, but it didn’t translate very well. I knew what I wanted to do, but couldn’t make the paint obey my will. I’m thinking of taking the “gouache techniques” Brainstorm Flash course this summer taught by Mike Hernandez. I love his paintings, and I found some of his teaching on youtube, and I like his teaching style. I would like to practice these more often.

Landscape from imagination.

This feels to saturated. I think it would be better if it were desaturated by about 50%. Also, the sky is too dark.

Playing around with grass.

Landscape from photo.

I really botched this one. I should have spent more time on it, but it felt like it was going nowhere.

Landscape from life. My backyard.

This is the most successful of the week. Again, I should have spent more time on it, but it got to a point where I didn’t know what else to do.

Since classes have started back up, next week will be back to a normal drawing schedule.
