Retrospective

I’m finished with block 1 (of 4) of the Evolve program. In some ways I’ve learned a lot and gotten better at painting, but I really haven’t progressed as far as I thought I would. The feed back for every single assignment as basically been “make better gradients,” and in every painting, I try to make better gradients, but I just can’t seem to do it. I follow all the advice: use a small amount of paint, wipe the brush often, use a light touch. Sometimes I have too much paint. In that case the edges don’t dissolve, the sharp edge just expands out farther. Other times I have too little paint, and I scrape down to the canvas. I actually get the best results blending lightly with a dry brush, but I was told to never do that. Objectively, I am getting better. The gradients on part 2 were way worse than the gradients on part 20, but it feels just as bad now as it did then. It feels like I have absolutely no control of what’s happening on the canvas.

Work

Block 1, part 18

Block 1, part 19

Block 1, part 20

I think I would have been ok with this if I hadn’t seen other students’ work. Some of them looked absolutely professional.
