Retrospective

I didn’t quite finish all the feet and hands exercises from the Proko anatomy course, but I’ll likely come back to feet and hands in future units. I’m looking forward to Figure drawing IV next month to see how my anatomy knowledge helps when drawing whole figures.

Now that I have learned the basics of anatomy I want to return to figure drawing. I’m going to focus on comic art this month, which means all my references will be from comics.

David Finch’s figure drawing tutorials on youtube.

I’ve gone through all these videos before, but in the past my strategy was to draw along as I watched, completing each drawing that Finch did. After that I would move on to the next video. …

Retrospective

I’ve finished all the leg anatomy assignments. Next week will be the foot, and then I’ll circle back to the lessons on hands that I skipped in the arms section. I wish I started studying anatomy earlier. It helps so much to know what I’m drawing rather than just trying to copy bumps on a figure. It’s also really helpful for inventing figures. …

Retrospective

I finally finished my latest comic page this week, and I’m getting close to finishing my first pass through the anatomy of the body. I’m still splitting my time between 50% studying and 50% working on original art.

Retrospective

This week I finished the leg and foot bone exercises in the Proko leg anatomy course. I also made some good progress on an original comic page, but it was really slow-going. I spent half the time trying to figure out how to approach the problem at hand, and the other half the time actually drawing my solution. …

Retrospective

This week I started focusing more on a comic style with graphite and moved away from charcoal. I think tonal drawing is important because it teaches me a lot about form, light, and value, but since I ultimately want to illustrate graphic novels I need to practice more with a linear style. My drafting table worked out well for charcoal, but when I hold a graphite pencil in a writing grip for small details, I need…

I’m enjoying studying anatomy, so I’m going to move right into leg anatomy this term. Since learning arm anatomy has improved the way I think about arms so much, I want to keep going so I have an introduction to all anatomy from head to toe.

For the next year I plan to spend 50% of my drawing time studying and 50% producing original art. I also will be focusing more heavily on comic style art, because that’s what I’m interested in creating. …

Retrospective

This was a great week. I logged over 30 hours of drawing for the first time in several weeks, and half of that was working on original art. Going forward this year, my plan is to spend 50% of my time studying and copying, and 50% drawing from imagination and working on original art. Since my study time was cut down, I dropped the Bridgman hand drawing exercises. I wanted to spend all of that time…

Retrospective

This week stood out in that I drew from imagination more than I have during any week in the last 6 months. My first year of drawing was focused on the fundamentals. Now that I’m entering my second year, I’m going to focus more on imagination. My goal is to use half of each drawing session to learn new things and do exercises, and the other half to draw from imagination, which includes doing exercises from…
